AGAIN*** GUEST BLOGGER: HYPOTHYROIDISM

Some of you let me know you were having issues seeing this post and so I re-posted it! Maybe this will help!

My mom, Twyla, learned a few years ago that she has hypothyroidism. I asked her to please share some things that she does to help fight it. Some people I have talked are frustrated losing weight because their thyroid prevents it. There are ways to get past it and she will share a few things to help, well at least we hope they help!

Hypothyroidism:  Please educate yourself on this disease

Several years ago I had what was later described as a TIA(mini- stroke). The first thing the physician did was to feel my hair and neck. My hair was extremely coarse and my neck was very thick and hard. They strapped a heart monitor on me and ran thyroid tests, among many other tests. In the end they really believed the attack was brought on by a thyroid issue. It took several months to find the correct dosage of the thyroid medicine.   The TIA was a gift from God. It changed my life. I had all of the symptoms  but many are very vague issues such as feeling tired, being cold, slower pulse, numbness in toes, weight gain, depression, irritability, slight memory problems or confusion, dry rough skin, muscle weakness, hair loss, muscle cramps, constipation, etc… I had always had a weight problem and I was always VERY tired because I live a busy life. I noticed the other things and chalked them up to stress and lifestyle habits. Also a good bit of times these things all don’t happen at once. They are usually gradual and that is why you don’t notice it. 

Rivers and I talk about this issue quite frequently. She has been such an inspiration to me and is one of the reasons I have shed so many pounds in the last couple of years. I am inspired by her and value her opinion. I feel so much better when I control the disease and it does not control me. I am not a doctor but these are the things that help me.

  1. I ALWAYS take my medicine first thing in the morning on an empty stomach (I keep the pill and water right by my bed).
  2. I wait 30 minutes to drink my coffee caffeine blocks the absorption of my medicine)
  3. I wait around 2 hours to eat breakfast (I get up at 5:00 and eat breakfast at 7:00)
  4. I do not take any of my other meds until 7:00. (Blood pressure/vitamins-etc.)
  5. I always look up new medicine even supplements and food to see their influence on the thyroid.
  6. I do not eat raw goitrogen foods such as kale and cabbage (anything in the broccoli family) I will eat moderate amounts of these foods cooked.
  7. I try to avoid soy – gluten- fatty foods- walnuts (some days are better than others)
  8. I do not drink grapefruit juice since grapefruit blocks the absorption of meds
  9. I have lost weight by portion control, physical exercise, mental exercise, loving myself as much as I do others in my life, and switching to healthy food choices. Working out helps speed up the metabolism which I need. Since I have the weight issues I make sure I watch what I eat and how much I eat.
  10. Stress is a main trigger for a dysfunctional thyroid. It is hard for the thyroid receptor cells to absorb the thyroid hormone when one is stressed so controlling my stress is a top priority in my life.
  11. I check my temperature to check on my thyroid function level (some people believe you can put a thermometer under your arm for ten minutes in the morning and if it is under 98 -you MIGHT have a thyroid issue.).

 I am not a doctor but these are a few things that help me in my daily life.  I learn new things every day about my thyroid. I know when my meds are wearing off or they are not working. The main symptoms for me are hot flashes or very extreme cold feelings, irritability, fatigue, and depression. My food intake is harder to control on bad days. My mind has to kick in and take over the duties of maintaining a normal eating pattern.  The more weight I lose the easier it is for me to control this disease.

If you are suffering from hypothyroidism – DO NOT give up! Fight and conquer it! It can be done! You just have to accept it, research, find ways to deal with it, and move on! You can live that great lifestyle again! You just need to plan and change your lifestyle!

I totally get this! After having gestational diabetes I KNOW what she means! I had to plan and be prepared! I feel like that with most diseases you have to accept, research, and prep/plan! She has lost SOOOO much weight even with her hypothyroidism! No excuses, right? Find a way!! If you have been diagnosed with a disease don’t feel hopeless! You can fight it! You CAN do it!
